My history

Hi, I’m Carol Seaborne, and I qualified as a Level 5 Soft Tissue Therapist with the London School of Sports Massage in 2018. I set up my business to help people with minor injuries and pain. Before long, I found that even though I was working with all different types of injuries, the most common reason people came to see me was for back pain.

Back pain, I realised, is the leading cause of absenteeism from work and for some people leads to persistent pain. Since then, I have focussed my research and training on understanding the multifactorial aspects of back pain to offer my clients the benefits of a mix of knowledge, coaching and movement.

Aware that I needed more knowledge to better support people suffering from back pain and that movement was a crucial part of treating back pain, in 2020, I qualified as a Foundation Training Instructor and am currently the only FT instructor in Kent.

Essentially, the Back Care Clinic was born to fulfil my goal of helping people manage back pain and enjoy life again, free of fear and anxiety related to previous painful experiences.

I wasn’t always a sports massage therapist and back pain therapist, however. I started my working life as a graphic designer working on TV shows such as Art Attack and Catchphrase. That all changed when I had my children and, whilst they were growing up, I worked in schools so I could be on hand to look after them outside of school hours and enjoy watching them grow up.

My journey to set up the Back Care Clinic began when my daughter suffered from mental health issues and an eating disorder. Eager to help her overcome her problems and fuelled by a desire to understand the mind better and how it can impact our physical well-being, I trained as a Hypnotherapist and Eating Psychology Coach.

I loved learning about how the mind works and helping people think and feel better and positively change their lives.

As a keen sports player, learning hands-on massage was a natural progression that enabled me to combine my passion for helping people overcome mental health problems with treating physical issues that often manifest in pain. This additional training helped me to offer a holistic approach to treating back pain.

Providing sports massage therapy meant I could offer a more active approach to treating clients and draw on my hypnotherapy skills to understand what problems could be underlying the pain. I have learnt that the same issues, particularly anxiety, stress and low mood that effect mental health, often also impact how well someone copes with back pain, which can be chronic and debilitating.

What I can provide to you?

Setting up The Back Care Clinic has enabled me to empower people to take control of their pain and learn to manage it through movement. I feel privileged to guide them on their journey to live a richer, fuller life in which their pain is largely managed and controlled.

Many of my clients are women who often feel that their healthcare professional doesn’t listen to them or take their pain seriously, often resulting in under-treatment and them being re-directed towards psychotherapy. I am passionate about showing my clients that they are stronger than they believe and providing them with a back-care toolkit comprising exercises that help them manage their pain daily.

For me, back pain is more than just bones and muscles. Pain is influenced by someone’s story, beliefs, or lifestyle. Helping my clients unlock their potential to self-care for their back pain gives me an enormous sense of purpose and is very rewarding.

I enjoy keeping abreast of the latest findings about the causes of back pain and how to treat it by following the latest research, listening to podcasts on the subject and discussing the issue with friends who also work in the industry.

Over time, I would like to offer more online movement classes and bring more therapists on board who can provide complementary services, in-person or online, such as sleep therapy, counselling or nutritional support.
